The first thing you should do is have a clear leader within your organisation such as the CEO, Director or CFO deliver a statement to the organisation confirming that they are fully behind a drive to increase sustainable practices within the workplace.

It is important that right at the start staff know that change is being lead and supported by the leaders of the organisation.

Once that is clear send a memo to all staff asking for volunteers, make it short and snappy. Be clear as to the role of the volunteers, the support that they will get (possible rewards) and responsibilities.

Nurture your new team, have regular meetings, organise site visits to recognised green buildings to provide inspiration, provide them with opportunities to upskill and rewards for their efforts.

WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE OF FORMING AND WORKING WITH A GREEN TEAM?

For anyone with a relatively fast internet connection, visit the following url to view a short video that provides some tips on starting a green team in a small business.

http://livingthing.net.au/Go/Resources/RichMediaPodcasts/BusinessSustainabilitywithBobWillard/EpisodeGuide/tabid/557/Default.aspx

Select Number 7 "Sustainability and Small to Medium Enterprises".

I like this video because it's relevant to small businesses who may not have enough people to form an actual green team. It's also a good way of linking a business issue like cash flow with finding ways of populating your action plan.
